Proactiveに学ぶ
CNN STUDENT NEWSを見ていると、アメリカでは最近、警察の発砲により容疑者が死亡しているケースが頻発し、大きな社会問題になっているようだ。
少し前のニュースだが、CNN STUDENT NEWS May 27 2015では、バルティモアの現役の巡査の発言が取り上げられている。
フードをかぶってまるで犯人が発言しているようだが、現役巡査の発言なのだ。
Why do you think there’s an increase in the murder rate and numbers of shootings in the town?
Officers stopped being proactive.
Not patrolling?
Not patrolling, just stop being proactive.
Not talking to the community?
Not talking — stop being proactive.
殺人事件の増加と発砲事件の増加は何が原因か？
と聞かれたその巡査は、stop being proactiveを何度も繰り返している。
The New Oxford American Dictionaryによると、
proactive
adj.(of a person, policy, or action) creating or controlling a situation by causing something to happen rather than responding to it after it has happened
と記載されている。
日本語だと、先を読んで行動をおこす、主体的、積極的という意味になるだろう。
proactiveの反意語はreactive、
reactive：反応的な
この巡査は、最近のバルティモアの警官の行動はreactiveで警察に通報があったものしか対応してない。これが犯罪増加の原因と主張している。
なんか今の自分の取り巻く環境を言われているようでドッキリしてしまう。
せめて50代から学ぶ英会話は、proactiveに学習していきたいですね。
